Washington, D.C. (July 13, 2022) – For the second year in a row, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) ranked number one in the Partnership for Public Service’s Best Places to Work rankings released today. GAO placed first overall among mid-size federal agencies.

GAO’s strong showing reflects how positively our employees view the work we do to improve government performance in serving our country, as well as our workplace environment. It also supports our reputation as an employer of choice in the federal government,” said Gene L. Dodaro, Comptroller General of the United States and the head of the GAO.
Issued annually, the Partnership's rankings provide insights into federal employee engagement and the views of federal workers on such issues as leadership, innovation, and work–life balance. GAO has consistently placed among the top five overall since 2005; it placed first among mid-size agencies this year with a score of 89.8. The 2021 rankings reflect survey results from civil servants across the federal government.
GAO also has consistently ranked number one in diversity for mid-size federal agencies, but the diversity questions were not asked across the federal government in 2020 or 2021. Consequently, the Partnership did not release such diversity rankings this year.
The Government Accountability Office, known as the investigative arm of Congress, is an independent, nonpartisan agency that exists to support Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilities. GAO also works to improve the performance of the federal government and ensure its accountability to the American people. The agency examines the use of public funds; evaluates federal programs and policies; and provides analyses, recommendations, and other assistance to help Congress make informed oversight, policy, and funding decisions. Washington, D.C. (June 7, 2022) – The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has added the Unemployment Insurance (UI) system to its list of federal areas at “High Risk” for waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement, or in need of broad-based transformation. GAO is adding the system to the list now, in advance of a regular update scheduled for next year, to bring greater attention to the challenges facing UI and to help spur needed changes.
