International Trade: Trade Agreements Increasingly Promote Women's Rights and Economic Interests, but Barriers Remain Released: June 2022 [ GAO's Latesha Love, Director, International Affairs & Trade, speaking to the camera ] [ Latesha Love : ] Nations enjoy greater economic growth when women participate in their economies. But women in some countries face barriers to this participation, including unequal access to education, gender-based violence, limited or restricted women's rights and more. Trade agreements can help to empower women to participate in economic activities. In fact, the U.S. and other countries have a growing number of trade agreements that contain provisions that are gender-specific. But that number is small. Less than half of the U.S.'s Free Trade Agreements, and only seven of 62 Trade and Investment Framework Agreements include provisions that are specific to protecting or promoting women's rights and economic interests. At home and abroad, efforts are underway to better understand how trade policy can help to empower women economically. To learn more, read our report at GAO.gov.
